It’s been nearly a year since Hands Like Houses released the first track ‘I Am’ from their upcoming album, immediately captivating fans with the immense sound and talent behind the track, making Dissonants by far one of the most anticipated albums of 2016.

The word that comes to mind when trying to put the sound of the album into words is BIG. Everything about this album feels on a grandiose scale, from the huge chorus’s packed full of anthemic gang vocals, to the soaring guitars, the bold bass lines, and the epic vocal harmonies.

Frontman Trenton Woodley has been quoted saying “It’s better to get it right than to get it done” and after listening to Dissonants we couldn’t agree more. The wait is well worth it, and more, every artistic move seems strategic, every melody, every hit, every break, everything about this album is deliberate and meticulously planned, making for a well-constructed and highly sophisticated album.

Hands Like Houses are known for having a very recognizable signature sound, and have been hailed for breaking the classic Rise-core stereotype. One of the most distinguishing aspects have to be the vocals of frontman Trenton Woodley, who consistently produces crystal clear vocals other artists will aspire to. From his creative vocal melodies to his rare but highly regarded unclean screams, his talent is unmeasurable and a definite focus on Dissonants.

“It’s not only the vocals, but the lyrics of the album as well. Lyrically Dissonants is brilliant, boasting both beautifully metaphorical, and thought provoking lyrics. The album is engaging and effortlessly extracts emotion from the listener.”

Tracks like ‘Colourblind’ are full of intricate lines like “between the black and white, naming every shade of grey has left us colourblind” making observations about our society and it’s obsession with binary ideas.

Then you have tracks like ‘Glasshouse’, which will have bass players from here to Australia and everywhere in between rejoicing in the over driven bass lines which have been pulled to the forefront of the mix. Here, bass is celebrated for its sound, rather than simply taking its obligatory roll filling in the lows in the background. This unique change of musical perspective gives the tracks a groovy, hard-hitting dynamic. The intricate bass lines have been present in the music of Hands Like Houses before, but this time around Joel Tyrell’s bass is much growlier, really emphasizing the sound one step farther.

The 46 minute album ends with the track ‘Bloodlines’ which pulls everything together, showcasing the talent of each separate member, and then combining it all into an epic finale. Powerful lines being chanting, built up farther with crashing drums and soaring guitars the track ends on the line,

“Just by giving up, we give ourselves away”
“Just by giving up, we give ourselves away.”
“Just by giving up, we give ourselves away.”

Dissonants is well worth the wait, and does exactly what good music should, it makes you feel. Over and above being an excellent sounding album, this album offers more, leaving it’s listener with something deeper and more meaningful that lingers long after the music has stopped. Dissonants is an absolute must listen when it drops later this month on February 26th.
